CHAMP Camp 2015

Well it’s been a month since CHAMP Camp ended, and it was a great week!

This year, I was with the older boys in Raymond cabin! It was a lot of fun…. The theme this year was “Still Chillin’ After 25 Years” and we celebrated Christmas in June. Of course, we consulted Clark W. Griswold (from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation) for our outside lighting plan. It was also the first time I’ve ever seen a Christmas tree on the roof!

Our welcome night activity was a drum circle which was thoroughly enjoyed by all, and then on Monday we started our trail group activities. Our first activity was at the Horses, where our campers got to lead some horses on ropes and take carriage rides. That afternoon we had a wonderful arts and crafts session. That night we had our camp wide dance in the Dining Hall. Of course, the Christmas theme was in full force, including a visit from Santa Clause himself!

On Tuesday, we went to the Zipline in the morning, and all the campers in our cabin had a great time riding down the zipline! In the afternoon, we went to the climbing tower with the younger kids and all of them either climbed or rode the basket up the tower. We even had one kid climb all the way to the top for the very first time! That night we had our evening activity at the waterfront.

On Wednesday, we went back to the waterfront in the morning, for a fun time fishing, boating, and canoeing. That afternoon we went to the pool, which is my favorite thing to  do! Again the younger kids joined us, and I was the victim of several gratuitous water attacks from some of the campers, but it was all in good fun. That night was our closing campfire, which is always a bittersweet  time when we celebrate the camp “graduation” of kids who are attending their final year.

On Thursday we had the traditional breakfast in cabin – It was certainly nice to be served breakfast by the camp leaders! Then we went down to the outdoor stage where the cabins did the skits they had well rehearsed over the week. Of course, since the theme was “Still Chillin’ After 25 Years”, all the skits were winter / Christmas themed.

All in all it was a great week, there was lots of Christmas decorations up throughout camp, and while my light flashy-circuit didn’t quite work the way it was supposed to, the fact that the lights were flashing on and off in a strange way added to the “Christmas Vacation” theme…

I can’t wait to go back next year!

Kids react to 80s computers

I found this link today, seeing how kids react to 80s computers – When I was in first grade, back in 1983, I used one of these computers – complete with two floppy drives (back when floppy disks really WERE floppy!). Seeing these kids today, I kinda think I might have reacted similarly, were I handed an iPad (Where do you put the disk in?)

Anyway, enjoy the video

Heading to camp!

Well, I will soon be departing for CHAMP Camp, in Indiana, near Indianapolis! I have tested my APRS tracker, and you will be able to view my progress here. I will try to update during the week, if I am able to find wifi.

I say “Merry Christmas”

A Christmas tree made out of printed circuit boards and electronic components

Oh Christmas Tree!

Ever since I can remember, there were three traditional Winter greetings, “Merry Christmas”, “Happy Holidays”, and “Season’s Greetings”. I’ve never liked saying anything other than “Merry Christmas” ever since I was little, and only recently have I given much thought to why that is. Continue reading I say “Merry Christmas”

Time to get an official web site!

Well, I’ve had many people telling me I should create a web site or a blog or whatever, so, here it is! I want to talk about my opinions on current events, and give you, the reader, practical advice on getting the most out of all your technical gadgets and gizmos in your life. If you have any comments or suggestions, or even ideas on what you want me to talk about, you can get in touch with me here.

I know the site looks a little “bland” right now but keep stopping by! I plan to keep adding new content on a regular basis. Suggestions for links, feeds, etc are always welcome!
